Here at Humane Fort Wayne, we value all cats – even the ones that are often overlooked and underappreciated. There are a few lovely felines that have been at the HFW Shelter for a while that are incredibly sweet and friendly, but have just not found their purrfect match yet.

Rochelle W. is a very calm and low-key girl… until its playtime! She gets really into playing with string toys and has a blast! When she is relaxed, she enjoys perching on top of boxes and watching the people and cats around her. Rochelle is a sweet cat who is looking for a family to provide her with love… and some boxes!

Sweetness is a beautiful gal whose unique voice makes her sound a little mean, when in reality, she is sweet like her name suggests! Sweetness is independent and would do best in a home without young children. She enjoys pets and snuggles, but she will just need some time to get to know you first!

Farnsworth is super outgoing and friendly, and he loves belly scratches. He’s everybody’s friend and he’s part of the welcoming committee in Cat Room 2! His face makes him look a little angry, but meeting new people and cats is actually his favorite thing in the world!

Paisley is the definition of beauty. She is a sweet senior who is just waiting for the right family to take her home and adore her! Paisley’s favorite activity is sitting in the sun and watching the birds outside her window. She has a very calm and laid back personality that would make her the perfect fit for a quiet household.

Rochelle W., Sweetness, Farnsworth, and Paisley are all some of our longest resident cats at HFW. All of these cats are full of so much love and they’re just waiting for the right person to give it to. Fur real though, all of these cats are truly remarkable!

Hello Plio! This 2-year-old gal has a lot of interests. She’s a brilliant dog who knows a few commands. She also enjoys squeaky toys, playing fetch, going on walks, and most of all – cuddles! Plio’s favorite part of the day is hanging out with people who are excited to give her pets and all of their love. Not only does she love people, but she loves other dogs, too! She is currently co-kenneled with another dog and has tons of fun during doggy playgroups. Plio often looks scared in photos because she holds her ears back, but she is a very calm and relaxed dog. She’s an absolute sweetheart who gives as much love as she gets! Fur real though, Plio is a true people person… or pup!

Nefertiti, Queen of the Lobby, is a returning guest of Humane Fort Wayne. Two years ago she was adopted by a kind man that saw her grace and beauty and her FIV diagnosis didn’t bother him one bit. Unfortunately he recently passed away and poor Nefertiti, now 8 years old, is in search of a new kingdom to rule over. Thankfully Humane Fort Wayne always has a place for former guests to rest until a new, kind family comes to take them home. And because of advocacy work with FIV cats, we now know that, “FIV-positive cats can live long, fulfilling lives. Casual, non-aggressive contact does not appear to be an efficient route of spreading the virus. As a result, cats in households with stable social structures where housemates do not fight are at little risk of acquiring FIV infections,” (Virginia Beach SPCA).

Nefertiti is a sweet senior cat with a cute and quirky meow who loves lots of pets and enjoys lounging around like the royal lady she is. Due to her FIV diagnosis, she doesn’t get a lot of social interaction at the shelter compared to some of the other cats so she is really looking forward to her perfect match sweeping her off her feet and taking her home! Fur real though, Nefertiti is such a loving companion!

Adopt Nefertiti and give her another chance at a happily ever after. Fill out an Adoption Application today!

Hey Faye! This 8-year-old Staffordshire, Bull Terrier Mix is super calm and laid back. She would much rather relax by your side and enjoy the nice weather than run around playing fetch, but who can blame her? She’s past her puppy days and she knows what she wants! Faye would do best as the only pet in the home so she can get all the attention and snuggles! She is just a wiggly and happy gal looking for a home that will take in a senior dog. This happy little hippo will warm your heart. Fur real though, make Faye’s day – adopt!

If you are looking for a dog to love and get that love back tenfold, then fill out an Adoption Application for Faye today!

Have you heard of a Manx cat? They’re a special breed of domestic cat originating on the Isle of Man, with a naturally occurring mutation that shortens the tail…and we have TWO here at Humane Fort Wayne! While Manx cats’ coats range in color, our stubby-tailed twins are all black. Panther, the sweet one, and Harley, the spicy, adventurous one, are both great with other cats, love meeting new people and like to perch on shelves and towers! They are each about 1 year old and are looking for a home to settle down in. No tails required! Fur real though, the Manx Twins are double the love!

Fill out an adoption application today and come meet the tail-less twins!

She is beauty, she is grace, playtime with Gratia will put a smile on your face! This gorgeous gal is obsessed with playing ball. And she’s good at it, too! She’ll politely drop her ball in front of you and once you’ve thrown it, she’s as quick as a boomerang to bring it right back to you. It doesn’t matter if it’s a tennis ball, a volleyball, or a beach ball – she absolutely loves it. If you let her, she would play fetch for hours nonstop. In fact, if you try to take a break too early, Gratia will literally push the ball to you and give you her sweetest puppy dog eyes. (And who could resist those?!) Her energy may seem endless, but she loves to snuggle and relax with people, too. Gratia is a talented 4-year-old American Bulldog Mix who is great at sharing her toys and knows the commands “leave it” and “sit”.  Fur real though, she is such a sweet girl who would love a playmate who will share her excitement for tennis balls!

If you want a forever playmate, then Gratia is the girl for you! Fill out an Adoption Application today!

Doctor Barber doesn’t know what he wants to be when he grows up, and sometimes when walking, his limbs don’t know what they are doing either. His specialty, playtime, is just as silly as it is sporadic, but despite his quirky movements and lack of normal cat balance, he’s incredibly affectionate and loves his cat friends and people, too.

The Doctor is a 1-year-old sweetheart with special needs. When he came to Humane Fort Wayne, he struggled with a prolonged high fever. He fought the infection for 3 weeks, which may have caused some neurological issues that make him a little uncoordinated. As he plays and runs, his muscles are becoming stronger and he is getting better every day! We’re not sure if he will ever get back to 100%, but he takes life in a wobbly stride, and would love to bring his gentle and playful personality into your home. Fur real though, Doctor Barber is such a joy to be around!

If you would like to experience life with Doctor Barber and learn his secrets about happiness, fill out an Adoption Application today!

Mia Wallace is the opposite of her Pulp Fiction namesake. She’s not much of a dancer, she’s vice-free, and prefers to be a wallflower. You may have missed her if you’ve been in to visit with our cats. She is a phenomenal nurse to fellow feline, Doctor Barber, likes to sit in a lap or two, and will make a great addition to any home with other cats or house plants. She might be, in fact, an actual houseplant. Hard to say, her camouflage skills are impeccable. This 5 year-old gal would love to find a nice, quiet home where she can become more confident and share all the love in her heart. Fur real though, Mia is one of the sweetest cats you will ever meet!

If you would like to show Mia Wallace some love and help her come out of her shell, fill out an Adoption Application today!

Adam might be a senior, but he still likes to party! At 10 years young, he likes memes including Pizza Rat, plays competitive string games, socializes with other people and has hilarious and bawdy stories from his youth. Adam is an asset to any house without other cats or young kids, because let’s be honest…he has no filter and his jokes are dirty. He is FIV positive, but he doesn’t let that slow him down! He loves catnip, toys, yummy treats, and head scratches. Adam may not be the most conventionally attractive cat, but he has the sweetest heart. Fur real though, this cat is incredible!

If you would like to add Adam to your family so you can learn all about his adventures, fill out an Adoption Application today!

The Allen County SPCA and H.O.P.E. for Animals announced today that their organizations have been re-named collectively Humane Fort Wayne.

On January 1, 2021, the two organizations legally merged to become a single, nonprofit entity. To solidify the merger and establish a true joint identity, a team of staff and board leadership, community stakeholders and marketing professionals was chosen to evaluate and select a new name for the organization, and in the end chose Humane Fort Wayne, formally the Humane Society of Greater Fort Wayne.

“It’s a brand new day for animal welfare in Allen County and beyond,” said Executive Director, Jessica Henry. “Not only will our name change reduce confusion between us and others with a similar acronym, but, more importantly, it heralds a true union between our organizations and signals to our entire community that we are so much more than just pet adoption. We believe we are the future of animal welfare in northeast Indiana, and our new name – ‘Humane Fort Wayne’ – is symbolic of our new mission – all of us, working together for the good of animals and humans.”

While the name and look of Humane Fort Wayne is new, all of the programs that have been available for pets (and pet lovers) including adoption, pet retention assistance, low cost spay/neuter, veterinary wellness services and more will continue to be offered.

Additionally, Humane Fort Wayne will continue to operate out of two locations – the shelter (formerly Allen County SPCA), located at 4914 S. Hanna Street, and the clinic (formerly H.O.P.E. for Animals) located at 1333 Maycrest Drive.

Humane Fort Wayne is the city’s only 100% donor-funded, nonprofit animal shelter and low-cost clinic.

Jessica Henry said, “As our city’s oldest animal shelter, combined with our progressive low-cost clinic options and social programs for disadvantaged pets, we look forward to serving this community for decades to come.”

Frequently Asked Questions

With a tremendous amount of overlap in our missions, values, and strategic plans, and very little overlap in our programs and services, we determined that we are able to have an even more positive impact on pets and their owners by joining forces operationally and becoming a single organization. On January 1, 2021 we officially merged as a single, nonprofit entity.

To celebrate the merger of two organizations into one, new animal welfare institution, we adopted a new name and brand through a rigorous strategic process, including a team of staff and board members from each organization as well as key community members.

Nothing. The new organization will continue to offer all of the same services and programs offered before, in the same locations as before. Both locations will offer education and outreach programs and volunteer opportunities. The Clinic (1333 Maycrest Drive, Fort Wayne, IN 46805) offers Low-cost spay and neuter surgeries, Low-cost Wellness Clinic services, and the Community Cat program. The Shelter (4914 S. Hanna Street, Fort Wayne, IN 4680) offers a Comprehensive pet adoption program, Pet Retention and Pet Surrender programs, Emergency and In-Home Service Pet Assistance programs, and the Working Cat program.
