HOW TO USE THE MICROCHIP SCANNER
START
Press the OK button. Press and hold the READ button as you scan the pet. (The scanner needs to display “READING.”)
SCAN
Start at the pet’s head and slowly scan side to side all the way to the tail, making several “S” shaped passes over each area. Slowly scan down the back, neck, chest, and legs.
NUMBER
If the scanner beeps and numbers appear on the screen, this pet has a microchip! Take a cell phone photo of the number or write it down for reference.
SEARCH
Found a chip? Check where it is registered by scanning the QR code. Call the number provided by the website and the microchip company will walk you through next steps.

CHIP OR NO CHIP?
STEP 1: Look Up the Microchip
- Find out where the microchip is registered by visiting PetMicrochipLookup.org and entering the chip number.
- Search results will display which company the chip is enrolled with (ex. 24Petwatch, HomeAgain, AKC Reunite, etc).
- Contact the registry with the phone number provided. You’ll provide the pet’s chip number, your contact info, where the pet was found, and other relevant details. The microchip company will attempt to contact the owners on your behalf.
STEP 2: Contact Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control
- Complete a Found Pet Report with FWACC online or by phone:
- During business hours: 260-427-1244
- After business hours: 260-449-3000
- Work with FWACC to determine a course of action for the pet. You may choose to house the pet temporarily or ask FWACC to hold the pet.
- Immediate options will depend on time of day, officer availability, the pet’s condition, and other factors.

- Send the pet’s info/photo to Lost Dogs of Fort Wayne or Lost Cats of Fort Wayne groups on Facebook.
- Consider posting the pet’s info on neighborhood apps such as Ring Neighbors, Nextdoor, or Citizen.
